Which convenience store ice cream will be named the best ever of 2021?

Updates: With 228 votes, Drumstick Vanilla beat out Magnum Classic, which received 124 votes. Between Samanco and Mochi Ice, Mochi Ice won with 273 votes to Samanco's 75. Tune in this Friday to our Instagram Live at 4pm to catch the four new contenders for Round 2 of the Game of Cones. Again, you'll be able to vote in our story or on our website starting Friday.

This Frozen Friday, we kick off with the first round of ice creams in our Game of Cones to decide which is the best ice cream in Hong Kong under HK$30 (bracket style).

Esther Cheung and Amalissa Hall hopped on Instagram Live to taste, discuss, and rank four out of eight ice creams based on these categories: Sweetness, Texture, Practicality and Originality.

If you missed that, we’ve summarised our points below (or you can rewatch on IGTV), but don’t let that affect your own decision. It’s your choice which ice creams go to the next round, and which one will ultimately win.

Drumstick Vanilla vs Magnum Classic

Drumsticks are a favourite for a reason. Creamy vanilla ice cream, crunchy nuts, and a crispy cone with a chocolatey coating all combine to make a delicious confection perfect for a hot day. They’re Amalissa’s favourite, but Esther had never eaten one! She definitely enjoyed it though.

Sweetness: 4/5

Texture: 5/5

Practicality: 3/5

Originality: 3/5

The Magnum Classic was stark in contrast with the Drumstick: sweet vanilla coated equally sweet chocolate. Very hefty for its size, which is a plus, but fairly two dimensional in comparison to the Drumstick.

Sweetness: 5/5

Texture: 3/5

Practicality: 3/5

Originality: 2/5

Samanco vs. Mochi Ice

Neither of us had tried a Samanco, but the Korean company came through with its ice cream version of the famous Japanese taiyaki. This frozen fish-shaped treat, consisting of vanilla ice cream with a smooth layer of red bean paste encased in wafer, was a surprising hit.

The one downside to this treat was that the wafer casing seemed to split quite easily, making for a potentially leaky situation.

Sweetness: 4/5

Texture: 4/5

Practicality: 3/5

Originality: 5/5

Mochi Ice is a classic convenience store pick. Simple vanilla ice cream paired with thin, chewy mochi makes for a satisfying treat. Better yet, you get two, so you can enjoy eating both, or save the other for another time if you just want a quick ice cream hit.

Sweetness: 3/5

Texture: 5/5

Practicality: 5/5

Originality: 4/5
