US vice-president J.D. Vance said on April 12, 2026 that the US and Iran had failed to reach an agreement after marathon negotiations in the Pakistani capital Islamabad. Vance told reporters that the US had not yet seen a “fundamental commitment of will” from the Iranians not to develop nuclear weapons. Iran blamed “excessive demands” from the US for the failure of the talks, saying they had “hindered a common framework and agreement”, according to the Tasnim news agency.
