At this year’s World Robot Conference in Beijing, a Chinese robotics company was quick to capitalise on the latest craze – the shoddy animated film Niu Lai that has become a viral sensation. Other humanoid robots showcased impressive dexterity, performing drum solos and playing table tennis as they captivated attendees at Wednesday’s opening of the annual tech fair in the Chinese capital. But while many of the robots on display caught the eye of visitors, China’s robotics industry is under increasing pressure to come up with applications that generate real-world returns.
