The National Higher Education Entrance Examination, also known as gaokao, will take place from this Sunday to Tuesday. Gaokao is widely considered one of the world’s most competitive exams. Over 13 million students will sit the exam in 2026, but less than 40 per cent of the candidates will be accepted into a university. The immense pressure students face often sparks controversy, but many view gaokao as a fair system that puts students on the path towards social mobility.
