Rescuers search for missing miners at site of China coal mine accident

Two miners remain missing on May 24, 2026 after a gas explosion triggered China’s worst mine accident in more than a decade in Shanxi province. The Liushenyu Coal Mine, in Qinyuan county, is classified as a high-gas mine – meaning it contains dangerous levels of methane. More than 120 survivors were being treated at a nearby hospital for injuries, including exposure to toxic gases.
