Police have arrested nine people suspected of covering up the shoddy construction and unsafe conditions of a six-storey building that collapsed in the Chinese city of Changsha, in central China. At least 39 people were missing, most of them students of the nearby Changsha Medical University, after the mixed-use building collapsed on April 29, 2022. Rescuers said they were in a race against time to find survivors within the first 72 hours, a window known as the “golden period” when survival rates are highest. Seven people have been pulled from the rubble and another 16 remain trapped inside.
