Rafael Nadal, 22-time grand slam winner, to retire from professional tennis at end of season
The Spaniard, who won 92 titles and the French Open a record 14 times, says in a video released on X he will retire after the Davis Cup finals
Rafael Nadal on Thursday announced he will retire after the Davis Cup finals in November, ending a career which brought 22 Grand Slam titles, global respect and inspired epic, iconic rivalries with Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
The 38-year-old, whose 22 grand slam wins included 14 French Open titles, announced the news in a video message posted on X.
He said: “Hello everyone. I’m here to let you know that I am retiring from professional tennis.”
“It has been some difficult years, these last two especially,” he said in a video.
“It is obviously a difficult decision, one that has taken me some time to make. But in this life everything has a beginning and an end.
“I am very excited that my last tournament will be the Davis Cup representing my country. It’s closing the circle because one of my first joys was the final in Seville in 2004.”
The Davis Cup knockout phase will be played from November 19 to 24.
