The Transport and Logistics Bureau recently announced its Transport Strategy Blueprint and its vision of promoting efficient travel. Since the road and rail arteries of the city are well developed, you can easily reach any place here within an hour or so. That said, there is room for improvement.
In recent years, the authorities have made strenuous efforts to develop the Northern Metropolis, which will better connect with the mainland. Some industries will move to the new development area and are likely to become economic drivers in the coming decades. While it is quite convenient to travel from Kowloon to the New Territories, the same cannot be said of travelling between Hong Kong Island and the Northern Metropolis.
To strengthen connectivity between Hong Kong Island and the New Territories without putting an unnecessary burden on Kowloon, the authorities should consider building a fourth cross-harbour tunnel.
This could be a 5km tunnel linking Kennedy Town directly to the south of Tsing Yi. Motorists would then be able to make better use of existing roads like Tsing Tsuen Bridge, Tsing Ma Bridge, Nam Wan Tunnel and Ting Kau Bridge to effectively connect to areas including Kwai Tsing, Tsuen Wan, Lantau, Tuen Mun, Yuen Long and most importantly, the Northern Metropolis.
