Letters | Create an international DSE to extend Hong Kong’s educational reach
Readers discuss Hong Kong’s educational strategy, Shenzhen’s merger opportunities and banking charges

Education has long been one of Hong Kong’s greatest strengths. Yet, as we look to the future, it is crucial to adapt our educational strategy to resonate on a global scale.
However, we believe there is a need for a more ambitious vision that not only creates opportunities for local students but also enhances Hong Kong’s reputation as a global hub for talent development. This lies in the untapped potential of the Diploma of Secondary Education. An internationalised DSE could broaden prospects for local students while attracting students from overseas.
Therefore we propose the creation of an International Diploma of Secondary Education (iDSE), which would extend the DSE’s global reach without affecting local candidates. Drawing on the International Baccalaureate model, the iDSE could develop subjects with cultural understanding and complexity, promoting inclusivity and a broader educational spectrum.
For example, the Chinese language papers could be offered at different levels of difficulty, as is already done with the English language papers. Such measures would help benchmark the Hong Kong curriculum more closely against other well-known global public examinations.
