Star Wars' Porgs are all the rage this Christmas: but are they cute and cuddly, or better suited to horror films?

It's all about the Porgs this Christmas.Forget Rey and Finn: the biggest stars of the latest Star Wars movie, The Last Jedi, are the porgs. These sea bird species are native to Ahch-To, the island to which Rey (Daisy Ridley) travelled at the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, to find Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill).
But people aren’t exactly sure what to make of the creatures, which are appearing on merchandise from lunchboxes and T-shirts to cufflinks and swimsuits. Opinions seem to waver between cute and creepy, or just stick at utter confusion.

Bad Porg!
He looks like a weird hamster and bunny hybrid who’s prone to bouts of hysteria. Wouldn’t recommend as a pet.

Recycling is such big business, even in the movie industry, apparently. Porgs look like someone made an Ewok (from the original movie trio) out of Play Doh, stretched it, then shrunk it with the reducio charm.

Whaaaaaat??
Its dumpy potato shape reminds me of a penguin, but clumsier. Its buggy eyes and sharp teeth show that though it’s small, it has a strong fighting spirit. It seems to have that “questioning head-tilt” thing that all birds have, but what is it asking me?

It’s cute, but at the same time very sinister. It’s like marketing people took a sample of all the popular memes and presented it in one sellable creature. Let the spending begin.

A Porg’s big round eyes and fluffy may appear to be “cute” now, but wait a couple weeks and you’ll probably see images of Porgs everywhere you look. Before long you won’t be able to leave your home without being subjected to some kind of Porg-based marketing material. I doubt they’ll still be “cute” when you cannot escape from having to see the thing wherever you turn your head.
