High-speed rail services and flights across Guangdong province were cancelled on Sunday after Typhoon Noul made landfall in the province, bringing heavy rainfall to large parts of southern China.
Noul – the strongest typhoon to hit China so far this year – made landfall at Huizhou city in Guangdong at around 3.50am on Sunday.
The National Meteorological Centre issued its first red typhoon warning of the year – the highest alert level in a four-tier system – on Saturday evening.
The following morning it was lowered to first orange and then yellow alert as the storm weakened.
Noul brought winds of up to 162km/h (100mph), slightly higher than Typhoon Bavi, which hit the east and northeast of the country two weeks earlier.




The storm is projected to slowly move northwest across central Guangdong before heading north into Hunan province by early Monday morning, weakening further along the way.
Forecasters warned that it would create torrential downpours across large swathes of the country, including some major tech hubs, such as Shenzhen and Guangzhou, and the manufacturing heartlands in the Pearl River Delta.
The meteorological centre issued a red rainstorm alert on Sunday morning, forecasting heavy rain across Guangdong, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan and Taiwan until Monday morning.
Forecasters warned that as Noul moved further inland, rainfall would intensify across large parts of the country. Members of the public were warned to avoid disaster-prone areas such as mountains and river valleys.
The Guangdong authorities evacuated more than 800,000 residents in response to the typhoon, according to state news agency Xinhua.
Meanwhile, all rail services across Guangdong were suspended while flights to and from cities including Shenzhen, Foshan, Jieyang, Huizhou and Xiamen in Fujian were also facing severe disruption.
Domestic airlines had delayed or cancelled more than 1,800 flights as of 2pm on Sunday, according to flight data provider Umetrip, while a total of 34 airports had issued thunderstorm warnings.
As of noon, 418 outbound and 342 inbound flights had been cancelled at Shenzhen Baoan International Airport, according to Umetrip. Services continued at Xiamen airport but at least 35 flights were cancelled and others delayed.


Further south, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge was closed to traffic from midnight onwards, with details of the reopening to be announced later.
Unlike Typhoon Bavi, Noul is highly likely to penetrate deeper inland, leading to a longer duration and broader impact, the meteorological centre said, warning local authorities to prepare for the impact of prolonged rainfall.
