Shanghai mops up as Typhoon Bebinca reaches eastern China’s Jiangsu province
Financial hub of 25 million people lashed by winds and rains from strongest tropical cyclone to hit the city since 1949
Police and emergency workers were out in force on Monday dealing with sporadic flooding caused by the worst storm of its kind since deadly Typhoon Gloria hit the city in 1949.
Back then, Gloria reportedly killed more than 1,600 people in the country’s financial centre but this time there were no fatalities.
By noon, Bebinca’s centre had moved beyond the city, allowing flights to resume landing at Shanghai’s two major airports at around 2pm, and the first outbound flights to depart after 3pm.
Some metro line services also resumed from 2pm in Shanghai.
Highways, ferries and more metro services restarted operations after Shanghai lowered the typhoon warning signal to the least severe level of blue at 3.20pm
