Relations between China and Mexico should not be influenced by outside powers, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Monday, following reports that the United States was pressuring its neighbour over its ties to Beijing.
“China-Mexico relations are not directed at any third party, nor should they be influenced by any third party,” Wang told his Mexican counterpart Roberto Velasco Alvarez.
He added that China supported Mexico in maintaining its independence, safeguarding its sovereignty and security and opposing external interference, according to the foreign ministry.
Velasco, making his first official visit to Beijing since taking office in April, said both nations had a shared respect for sovereignty and equality.
He added that Mexico was willing to strengthen high-level exchanges, advance bilateral mechanisms and deepen pragmatic cooperation, according to a Chinese statement.
“I hope that today we can identify new areas of understanding and cooperation between our nations, for the benefit of our people, and lay the foundations for a joint work agenda for the coming years,” Velasco said, according to Mexico’s N+ news agency.
Velasco also said Mexico would host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) forum in 2028, an event that he described as “a historic opportunity” to project Mexico’s leadership as a bridge between the Americas and Asia, according to the report.
The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of mutual concern, the Chinese foreign ministry said.
Wang said China and Mexico shared similar positions on many international and regional issues, adding that Beijing was willing to strengthen strategic coordination with Mexico on multilateral platforms to safeguard their respective legitimate interests and jointly promote the unity and strength of the Global South.
Mexico also used the visit to highlight the opening of a new consulate in the southwestern megacity of Chongqing.


Velasco’s trip comes as Mexico is in talks with the US to lock in bilateral deals before the two countries enter three-way talks with Canada.
Trade negotiations between Ottawa and Washington collapsed last month, in part because of reported US demands to limit Canada’s trade deals with third countries. The restriction was widely seen as an attempt to target China.
Mexico may face similar pressure, with Bloomberg reporting in July that Washington was pushing the Latin American nation to mirror its trade barriers on Chinese steel and aluminium.
Mexico appears to be taking steps to ease Washington’s anxieties. At the end of last month, the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum submitted a proposed reform to the Senate to amend the country’s Foreign Investment Law.
The amendments would subject foreign acquisitions in sensitive sectors such as energy, artificial intelligence and semiconductors to national security reviews.
