Beijing’s top envoy in Washington has emphasised the need for “shared prosperity”, framing a possible summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping next week in South Korea as an opportunity for cooperation rather than confrontation.
Speaking at an event on Friday, China’s ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, said that China and the US, as the world’s two largest economies, should improve communication and manage their differences.
“In this chaotic world, we have 1,000 reasons to get China-US relations right,” he said.
“We hope the US side will cooperate with us, acting in accordance with the common understandings reached between the two presidents and in line with the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation.”
US-China relations are experiencing a resurgence of trade tensions characterised by tit-for-tat measures that have disrupted global supply chains and rattled financial markets. This comes after a period of relative stability earlier in the year.
High-level delegations from both sides descended on Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Saturday for a critical round of economic and trade consultations.
The talks are aimed at defusing a fresh escalation in bilateral frictions just days before Trump and Xi are expected to meet on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) forum in South Korea on Thursday.
The meetings in Kuala Lumpur, marking the fifth such series since May, are being held on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit, hosted by Malaysia from October 24 to 27.


Led by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer for Washington, and Vice-Premier He Lifeng for Beijing over the weekend, the negotiations come against a backdrop of China’s expanded export controls on rare earth elements and the Trump administration’s threats of 100 per cent tariffs on Chinese imports set to take effect on November 1.
In his speech, the Chinese ambassador said China was truly embracing globalisation and championing true multilateralism even though unilateralism and protectionism were on the rise.
However, no decoupling attempts would stop China from developing, and the country would open its doors wider over the next five years, he said.
“We have enough capability and confidence to address various domestic, external risks and challenges,” Xie said, adding that the country would continue to serve as an anchor of global stability and growth.
Ahead of the possible meeting between the top leaders, US officials, including Bessent, have labelled China’s move a “global supply chain power grab” and are pushing for immediate reversals, while floating concessions such as eased restrictions on US software exports that underpin everything from laptops to jet engines.
Agricultural issues loom large too, with the Office of the US Trade Representative launching an investigation into China’s compliance with the 2020 “phase one” trade deal, particularly stalled purchases of American soybeans and other farm goods.
Beijing halted all soybean orders over the summer. Overall bilateral trade dropped 15.6 per cent year on year to US$425.8 billion in the first nine months of this year as the tariff war intensified, Chinese customs data showed. China’s purchases of US goods fell 11.6 per cent from a year earlier to US$108.6 billion during the same period, while its US-bound merchandise shipments dropped 16.9 per cent to US$317.2 billion.
A fragile, temporary truce between the world’s two largest economies is set to expire on November 10. Vice-Premier He and Bessent, who described last week’s video call as “constructive”, are expected to discuss the new measures their countries have imposed on each other since the last round of trade talks in Madrid.
The Chinese ambassador also promised more opportunities for outsiders coming out of China’s next five-year plan, as Beijing outlined its development blueprint during a key Communist Party conclave earlier this week.
“We stand ready to share opportunities and pursue common development with the United States and all other countries,” he added.
