Thousands of firefighters and police were searching the area after the Boeing 737-800 plane crashed into a steep, heavily wooded site in Teng county, near the city of Wuzhou in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.

State broadcaster CCTV reported that plane debris and personal belongings had been found in the area.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China urged the industry to step up safety and to look into “hidden dangers in aircraft maintenance, flight weather conditions, personnel qualifications, operational skills and aviation security”.

“Air traffic controllers should improve weather forecasting and notify aircrews of on-site changes in a timely manner,” the CAAC said late on Monday.

It also called for airlines to strengthen monitoring and risk management of flights, report abnormalities and provide crews with technical and decision-making support.
