No gym, no problem: 8 ways to exercise outdoors in Hong Kong
If the sun is shining in winter, there are enormous benefits to be had from venturing outdoors
Hong Kong is glorious in the winter with clear skies, cooler temperatures and plenty of sunshine, so why would anyone choose to work out in a gym when they can easily do so outdoors?
The benefits of exercising outdoors include getting a dose of Vitamin D from the sun, which can help improve mental health and sleep quality, breathing in fresh air (depending on where you are) to reduce stress levels, and changing the environment to make your workouts less boring than hamster-wheeling it on the treadmill indoors.
If the sun is shining and you’d prefer not to be cooped up in a gym, here are eight ways to exercise outdoors in Hong Kong:
Hiking
One of Hong Kong’s favourite pastimes, hiking is a fantastic way to burn major calories outdoors while taking in amazing views of the city. From historic mountain trails to beautiful beaches and reservoirs, Hong Kong’s hiking trails stretch across the New Territories, Kowloon and Hong Kong Island and range from super steep to comfortably flat, making them suitable for every level of hiker.
Calorie burn: 400-600 calories per hour
Running
Running is another great way to exercise outdoors in Hong Kong, and the best part is you don’t need anything but a pair of running shoes. Head to your nearest park to hit the track or get closer to nature with trail running – if you’re feeling adventurous, try running through the streets of Hong Kong (but beware of pedestrians moving at the speed of sloths). A social yet solitary sport, there are plenty of Hong Kong running groups to join including Harbour Runners and Midnight Runners.
Calorie burn: 500-800 calories per hour
