We live in an era where, joyously, anything goes when it comes to fashion and that means the old rule about not wearing diamonds in the daytime has gone out the window.
Style experts like Annalisa Armitage, Sydney-based image consultant and stylist, are seeing a strong move to diamonds for casual wear. When it comes to diamonds by day, she says: “Your diamond engagement ring is worn every day so why not your diamond necklace, earrings and bracelet? Saving anything for ‘best’ is a thing of the past.

“Buy well – the best your budget will allow – and wear frequently. Buy and wear what brings you joy and if it’s diamonds, go for it. If your style is classic, wear simple, clear diamonds; if you’re more creative, go for original settings and coloured stones.

“Whether you’re heading for a day at the office or weekend casual, you can never have enough bling. The only exception to this would be your diamond tiara – save it only for the bride.”
If you want to wear flamboyant diamonds for a lunch date or other day engagement – the races, for example – let your diamonds do the talking by wearing a solid colour outfit against which they show to maximum effect. In a workplace that is creative, feel free to wear as large and as many diamonds as your inclination and income dictate.

If you work in a conservative office environment, opt for simple jewellery and keep to just a few pieces, like classic diamond stud earrings or small diamond hoops, a watch with diamond accents or a tennis bracelet, and an elegant pendant.
Even a diamond necklace works if you choose appropriately. Reed Krakoff, chief artistic officer for Tiffany & Co., created the Paper Flowers range, which includes a collar necklace and bracelet of interlocked flower petals in platinum and diamonds that go from office to evening wear.

“Luxury shouldn’t always mean formality,” Krakoff says. “Jewellery is meant to be worn, so we used precious stones and the finest materials, but in a way you can [wear] every day.”

Tiffany & Co.’s Diamond by The Yards is among the most iconic designs from the house. Simple and elegant, they offer a hint of sparkle that works for day and night. One of Tiffany’s successful recent lines is The T Collection of versatile demi-fine gold and diamond designs that are great when stacked with other items from the range or fine jewellery from other brands.

Cartier’s Diamants Légers range comprises ear studs, chain bracelets and short and long chains in rose, yellow or white gold with diamonds, which are also sold online. Some may say the brand’s Love collection – rings, bangles and earrings designed with varying degrees of gem set – is the defining jewellery collection that started the demi-fine diamond trend.
Piaget’s Possession collection mixes diamonds with colourful semi-precious stones for a relaxed yet elegant look.
The pendant is a good standby and you can ring the changes with other chains, plain or ornamented. There is an abundance of choice from top- tier jewellers.

De Beers’ Enchanted Lotus pendants are exquisite statement pieces without ostentation.
Van Cleef & Arpels’ Vintage Alhambra, a four-leaf clover shape bordered by gold beads with a centre diamond against a colour background, is also a good choice. The jeweller’s Frivole range and the Lotus openwork mini stud earrings in white gold and diamonds are a beautiful alternative to classic studs.

When it comes to diamond rings, there are lovely options in bands – from those that are paved with small diamonds to gold rings with channel-set or embedded diamonds.
Stackable diamond bands are perfect for day wear, at the office or socially. Chaumet’s Bee My Love collection of rings can be worn as stacks, with various gem-set options available to allow for versatile mixing and matching.
Even names that traditionally deal only in high jewellery – like Graff – are coming out with more daily options for diamond lovers. The Spiral collection of bangles is a gateway for those wanting to experience the exclusive brand.
