Let nature be the inspiration, whether you’re landscaping or introducing elemental features like fire or water, to create an outside hideaway with help from names like RH and frenchCALIFORNIA

Not everyone can escape to the country during the summer, but there’s no reason why you can’t create your own private outdoor paradise at home: a stylish and multifunctional area where you can relax, entertain and perhaps even connect a little with nature.

“Outdoor spaces are now true extensions of the home and designing them with intention creates a seamless flow between inside and out,” says New York-based interior designer Melissa Bowers. “For me, it’s about more than just matching colour schemes – it’s about cultivating experiences.”

“In cities where outdoor space is often at a premium, terraces, patios and loggias have become thoughtful extensions of the home. One of the strongest trends is blurring the lines between indoors and out,” adds Guillaume Coutheillas, founder of interior design studio frenchCALIFORNIA.

While decorative details will take your terrace from functional to fabulous, the first step in creating your perfect space is deciding how you will use it. Experts suggest creating defined zones that cater to your needs – be it gardening, meditating, dining or lounging.

This will help determine the type of furniture (if any) you need for the space. If you want a chill vibe, then opt for comfortable, versatile pieces such as modular lounge seating, low profile dining tables and loungers. Communal tables and benches are ideal for those who want to entertain large groups, while eclectic vintage-inspired pieces are another big trend that will add personality to your space.

Be sure to select materials durable enough to age well out in the elements, such as solid teak and treated performance fabrics. In its latest outdoor collection, for example, furniture brand RH – formerly Restoration Hardware – has included stylish yet robust pieces that are chic and long lasting. Highlights include a minimalist plinth made from weather-resistant composite concrete, and coffee tables and chairs crafted from all-weather aluminium that look both futuristic and yet contemporary.

“We’re seeing a real trend with customers looking to create a statement with sculptural shapes and forms in their outdoor spaces,” adds Candy Murray, interior style manager at Soho Home.

“Soft furnishings breathe life into an outdoor setting. They bring comfort, colour and a sense of invitation,” says Bowers. ‘’I prefer natural, breathable textiles – materials that move with the breeze and weather well over time. For humid climates, I lean toward smooth, quick-drying fabrics that stay light and fresh.”

Using consistent materials, tones and textures you can also create a connection with your interiors while going for a more luxe look.
