From Thai to African cuisine: why Hong Kong foodies are flocking to Wong Chuk Hang
- Komune, Golden Monkey X Pho Bar and the no-frills Pattaya Thai Food are just some of the eclectic eateries in this Southside district serving up Asian, Western or African food, as well as vegan choices like Impossible burgers and Omnipork patty rice
Wong Chuk Hang, once known as Hong Kong’s enclave of private kitchens hidden away in industrial buildings, now boasts an increasing number of easy-to-find – and varied – dining options. Here are some of our favourites.
Komune
This colourful, all-day dining restaurant boasts a charming outdoor terrace that is just the place for a cocktail or two. The à la carte menu features contemporary international cuisine with dishes intended for sharing. Diners looking for vegetarian and gluten-free meals are well catered to – try the buffalo cauliflower with blue cheese dip, and the warm kale salad with Brussels sprouts, crispy quinoa and almond dressing. The wild mushroom crostini with truffle butter and Parmesan, the prosciutto-wrapped pork chop (bone-in), and the 24-hour slow-cooked short ribs are crowd pleasers.

Golden Monkey X Pho Bar
This simple establishment serves fast-casual Asian rice dishes and salads and, of course, the ever-popular pho. Included on the compact menu is laksa, minced pork with Thai basil, Malaysian chicken curry, and Vietnamese honey-glazed pork. Salad picks include tofu with green papaya and chicken or beef vermicelli salad with a choice of four signature dressings. Diners get to create their own pho combination with a choice of beef brisket, grilled pork neck or US beef, noodles and condiments. The broth is complex and clean with an appealing sheen, while the brisket is enticingly tender. There is also a small outdoor area.
