With only four professional fights to his name, YouTuber Jake Paul has become one of the biggest paydays in boxing. Over the past 12 months, Paul has reportedly earned millions, putting him third on the list of highest-paid boxers, according to Sportico. The only two fighters ahead of him are super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez and former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.

As the 24-year old gears up for another fight this December – against reality TV star Tommy Fury – Paul might not be done rising up the ranks just yet. Staying true to his nickname, “The Problem Child”, he’s already causing a stir by not signing up for voluntary drug testing before the fight, according to various media reports.
But how did a YouTube and former Disney star end up in this position? Here’s a look at Paul’s illustrious journey thus far.
Teenage celebrity

At the age of 17, Paul was already building up his infamy on YouTube and the now-defunct Vine, posting funny – and often controversial – skits and pranks, gaining a strong following on the both platforms.
He soon caught the eye of Disney producers and was tapped to star in the comedy series Bizaardvark. He acted alongside the sensational singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo.
Disney star goes rogue

As Bizaardvark entered its second season, Paul’s controversial YouTube antics started to catch up to him. He found himself in trouble after his neighbours filed complaints against him and his housemates for creating a nuisance. Allegedly, they were lighting fires in their drained swimming pool, racing dirt bikes across their residence, and drawing in large crowds of fans.

Following these reports, Paul was abruptly dismissed from his role on Bizaardvark in 2017, according to Hollywood Reporter.

The “Problem Child” is born

In 2018, the prospect of YouTube boxing started to generate monumental interest. British personalities KSI and Joe Weller staged the biggest white-collar boxing event in history, drawing in over 100 million viewers globally across all channels, according to Upload Agency. After winning the fight, KSI called out Paul’s brother, Logan, as his next opponent.

As that event was arranged, Jake signed on to fight KSI’s brother, Deji Olatunji, on the undercard (a preliminary match). This marked his boxing debut and the birth of his fighting nickname, Jake “The Problem Child” Paul.
Jake won the fight and, with an amateur record of 1-0, he decided to become a professional boxer.
Beating the odds

Despite the onslaught of social media comments praying for his downfall, Paul has beaten the odds time and time again. With a 4-0 record as a professional boxer, his last two victories have come against Tyron Woodley and Ben Askren – former welterweight champions of the UFC and One Championship, respectively.

Paul says his fight with Askren received 1.5 million pay-per-view buys and generated around US$75 million, according to Dazn News. These numbers would place it as one of the biggest boxing matches in recent years. Paul’s base earnings from the fight amounted to US$690,000 – however, he’s said to have taken home well over seven figures. Four months later, he added another US$2 million to his purse from his fight against Woodley, according to CBC Sports.

As he now prepares to fight boxer Tommy Fury in December, Paul is coming up against his biggest challenge (and potentially, biggest payday) yet. If things go his way, here’s how the YouTube star might spend his next pay cheque.
The off-season

When he’s not in training camps, Paul can often be found flaunting his wealth on Instagram. His pay cheques turn into Rolls Royces of all colours, watches decked in precious jewels and flights in private jets. Most recently, Paul was seen customising a Ferrari SF90 Spider for his ever-growing collection.

Paul is also on the lookout for a new house after selling his Calabasas mansion, aka the Team 10 house, earlier this year. He decided to move away from Los Angeles to free himself from “many distractions” and focus purely on his boxing career, according to Distractify. It remains to be seen where he’ll choose to settle down – and how much he’ll splurge on his next home.
