The pandemic might have hit pause on the Indian film industry, but luckily for us, its masked superhero is back.
Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan kicked off 2021 with an innocuous post – “back on set” – that sent all 33.3 million of his followers into a tizzy. And for good reason – the Indian actor is on screen back where he belongs after a year of no film releases.
As the iconic Indian actor and dancer turns 47, we take a look back at the rise, fall and re-emergence of an icon.

Although Roshan was born on January 10, 1974 in Mumbai as the son of actor turned film producer/director Rakesh and his wife Pinky, you could say Hrithik Roshan the superstar was born on January 14, 2000 – the release date of the first film he lead. There is no greater example of an overnight sensation than the star’s success with the blockbuster Kaho Na Pyar Hai (Say it, You’re in Love).
With the biggest hit of the decade and a truckload of awards under his belt, Roshan, then 26, signed every possible major film with top directors, producers and leading ladies in the months that followed. He also married his long-time girlfriend Suzanne Khan and signed numerous lucrative deals with local and international brands.

Talk about a busy year. By the turn of the millennium, Roshan had single-handedly disrupted the Khan hegemony (Salman, Shah Rukh and Aamir) that ruled Bollywood throughout the 1990s. His fame was so great that even international stars knew of him. It seemed that nothing could possibly go wrong.
However, what followed this dazzling rise was an apocalyptic fall. Written off after a series of flops, leading magazines and trade pundits declared him box-office poison and a one-hit wonder as seven of his films tumbled or failed to recuperate their mammoth costs. Everyone started questioning the hot 20-something-star because of the cool reception of his films. A leading film magazine, Showtime, blasted the actor on its cover with a one-word, nail-in-the-coffin declaration: “finished”.

  As if that wasn’t bad enough, his interior designer wife (and mother of two sons) filed for divorce and his former co-star Kangana Ranaut blasted him in print and television with increasingly wild allegations and accusations. Roshan’s light and aura had considerably dimmed.
Film audiences, however, were not done with the hunky actor. He recalibrated his career under the aegis of his father’s film production company with smarter film selections. With Roshan senior producing and directing a slew of superhero hits, the father and son duo created a unique Indian franchise: Krrish, a masked Indian superhero who sang, danced and saved lives. All three films in the series did successive spectacular business, saving Roshan’s career. Roshan brought a childlike innocence and vulnerability to his role, helping him garner more awards and acknowledgement of his capabilities as an actor.

The fourth instalment of the film is currently in production and expectations are sky-high; Roshan’s last release, War, was the biggest blockbuster of 2019 and has reportedly raised his signing fee to seven figures.
And although he has not done a film since then, Roshan’s endorsement deals with major brands for everything from colas to cars and clothing have been second to none. (Duff & Phelps, a global valuation and corporate finance adviser, estimates that Roshan’s brand value is around US$34.1 million.)
