Australia has produced some incredible acting talents – such as Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett, Hugh Jackman, Rebel Wilson, Kylie Minogue, Geoffrey Rush and the Hemsworth brothers – but did you know there are many more? Here are some incredible actors from the Land Down Under who flew under the radar.
Margot Robbie
One of the brightest in the Australian constellation of stars at the moment, Robbie started out as Donna Freedman on soap opera Neighbours. Hailing from Queensland, her international breakthrough came when she was cast in Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street starring opposite Leonardo DiCaprio as the wife of protagonist Jordan Belfort. She’s garnered a lot of attention playing Tonya Harding in I, Tonya, Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad and her role in Oscar-nominated Bombshell. It’s only a matter of time of until she’ll win an Oscar or Golden Globe award, but we’re also looking forward to her portrayal of Barbie in the upcoming live-action feature film.
Guy Pearce
Easily one of the most underrated Australian names in Hollywood, Guy Pearce is one of the few actors who starred in two of the country’s most long-running soap operas – Neighbours and Home and Away. He gained international recognition in Australian breakout film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert in 1994. His most notable role was as amnesiac Leonard in Christopher Nolan’s Memento and as Aldrich Killian in Iron Man 3. He’s yet to sink his teeth into a role to earn him an award but like fine wine, we believe the best will come with time.
