Review | OnePlus 8T review: 120Hz display, fast charging, but camera struggles in low light compared to mid-priced rivals such as Google Pixel 5

  • Well styled, with an extremely thin screen and high-quality aluminium frame, its ‘Warp Charge 65’ charger gets the handset to a full charge in 40 minutes
  • Its AMOLED screen refreshes at 120Hz, but its camera falters in lowlight situations. Still, at less than US$500 in some markets, the handset offers great value

The smartphone world isn’t just Apple, Samsung and Huawei. OnePlus has long been regarded as an insider tip, and the Chinese manufacturer has entered the top five in European markets. The company promises top technology at a fair price.

Modern and well styled, with an extremely thin screen and a high-quality aluminium frame, the OnePlus 8T is one of these.

Its main camera now protrudes as a rectangle at the top left on the rear of the phone – as with most other current smartphones; previously OnePlus had always placed the camera in the centre. The device is well made and feels good; at 188 grams, it’s also relatively light. The display is 6.55 inches and offers Full HD Plus resolution (2400 by 1080 pixels with 402 ppi density).

The AMOLED screen displays colours beautifully and accurately, and not as excessively colourful, as some phones from China do.

It boasts a screen refresh rate of 120Hz – not even the current iPhone model can match that. It means that web pages and game scenes scroll smoothly. The main processor is a Snapdragon 865, and the RAM on board is either 8 or 12GB. The phone also comes with a large battery (4,500 mAh) that can easily last the whole day.
