Research journal editor and Instagram content creator Yuen Yiu (@cooking_yuen) moved back to Hong Kong from the US in 2021. He spoke to Andrew Sun.

Like most working-class families, I grew up eating whatever mum, and sometimes dad, made. For me, a sizzling plate at Cafe de Coral on my birthday was a big treat.

My first exposure to other types of cuisine was in secondary school. I blew my lunch allowance in Kowloon City on lots of Thai curries. I still eat at Amporn Thaifood (Shop 9, 3/F, Kowloon City Market and Cooked Food Centre, Kowloon City. Tel: 2383 1700).

I also used to eat a lot of 7-Eleven cup noodles, but my comfort food is still, to this day, beef brisket and four treasure rice. But now I have two kids – aged five and two – I mostly just stick to places like McDonald’s or Tai Hing.

They love the Jumbo Breakfast at McDonald’s and the ham and egg sandwich at Tai Hing. I wish there were more breakfast options that are not high-carb and high-fat within walking distance of my living room.
