Recently featured in the Affordable Art Fair, award-winning illustrator Kitty Wong’s work focuses on Hong Kong nostalgia, culture and even food. She spoke to Andrew Sun.

I grew up half in Hong Kong and half in Canada, where my family moved when I was eight.

We lived in a small town where many in the Chinese community worked in restaurants, including my family, so I grew up eating food from Chinese buffets and also delicious home-made meals by our Vietnamese-Chinese neighbours.

I like casual spots and comfort meals. I cook a lot to feel healthy, but I love to go on adventures on weekends, exploring places that have gone viral as well as other people’s local favourites. It is a fun way to use food to explore my own city, going to areas I would not usually visit.

For example, I have found the best pineapple bun is from Sai Kung Cafe & Bakery (6-7 Kam Po Court, 2 Sai Kung Hoi Pong Square, Sai Kung. Tel: 2792 3861). The best place for street-food-style stalls is Kwai Fong Plaza (Kwai Fong Estate, 177 Hing Fong Road, Kwai Chung).
