Car action has always been a defining ingredient of Hong Kong cinema’s hell-for-leather stunt work. Here, we look at some stunt car classics from over the decades.
1. Aces Go Places (1982)
Aces Go Places may have been a wacky comedy – but it was a wacky comedy with cars, motorcycles… and hang-gliders.
Legendary daredevil, stuntman and car stunt choreographer Blackie Ko Shou-liang doubled for Sam Hui Koon-kit in the motorcycle scenes and became instantly famous when he drove straight through a glass store facade in Tsim Sha Tsui East and landed on the road below.
Ko, a motorcycle ace who first became a stuntman in Taiwan, was invited to work on the film by director Eric Tsang Chi-wai and went on to have a prolific entertainment career in Hong Kong.


The last part of Aces Go Places features many notable car stunts, beginning when Hui and Karl Maka are trapped in their silver custom car – a kind of cheapskate Batmobile – by a fleet of enemy vehicles.
A hand grenade soon disperses them and leads to one of the funniest car stunt sequences ever, when the duo take on the assailants with remote-control models that pursue their targets and explode underneath them. No special effects were used here – the cars really do blow up!
One great shot, captured in slow motion with no cuts, features Hui – or rather his stunt double – leaping fully over the roof of an oncoming vehicle and landing on his feet behind it.
There is also an amazing waterside stunt where a car flies through the air and lands on the bonnet of a stationary vehicle – you can see the stunt driver hanging on for dear life – followed quickly by a shot of a car launching over the seafront and crashing into a yacht.
2. Police Story (1985)


The most famous car stunt in Hong Kong history, while not the most sophisticated piece of driving, happens in Police Story and sees Jackie Chan and his stunt team smash through a hillside shanty town in pursuit of a gang of drug dealers led by Chor Yuen.
The demolition derby features stuntmen jumping from roofs to avoid the carnage, explosive pyrotechnics and severely damaged cars hitting the road on the other side.
The scene is quickly followed by another classic driving stunt in which Chan pursues the villains onto a moving bus and climbs up the side using an umbrella handle as a hook. The umbrella was reinforced with steel.
3. Royal Warriors (1986)


Although it is better known for its martial arts scenes and a final set piece with heavy machinery, Royal Warriors features one of the best car chases in Hong Kong cinema, courtesy of Blackie Ko. The lengthy chase showcases many of the tricks that defined the visceral motor stunts of the 1980s.
The urban chase begins when the Japanese policeman played by Hiroyuki Sanada sees his wife and child killed by a car bomb. He dives into a car, with Michelle Yeoh’s policewoman and Michael Wong Man-tak’s escort officer following in a separate vehicle, trying to catch the perpetrator’s four-wheel drive.
Cue flying leaps, high-speed snaking, fender benders and impressive pile-ups. It does not stop there: Sanada has a fight against a giant bulldozer and is nearly buried alive under a sea of dirt.
4. Thunderbolt (1995)


Competition racing rather than street racing takes centre stage in this Jackie Chan crime drama directed by Gordon Chan Kar-seung, featuring motoring stunts overseen by Bruce Law Lai-yin.
Along with Ko, Law is the most famous car action choreographer in Hong Kong, known for orchestrating complex multi-car sequences. A trained martial artist who got into films when Jackie Chan asked for motorcycle riders to appear in Police Story, Law eventually moved into action directing and formed the Bruce Law Stunts Unlimited team.
The driving in Thunderbolt, which includes chases as well as races, is super-slick and really gives the impression of travelling at high speed.
Law also choreographed the exceptional car and motorcycle stunts in Police Story 3: Supercop.
5. Full Alert (1997)


Ringo Lam Ling-tung became known for including well-choreographed car chases in his gritty action dramas, and Full Alert is a good example.
Back in the 1990s, it was impossible to get permits to close off roads to film driving scenes, so directors resorted to “steal shooting” – filming illegally without getting caught to avoid a fraught negotiation with the police.
Full Alert showcases urban speed driving via Gloucester Road and Hennessy Road as Lau Ching-wan’s detective and a small fleet of police cars pursue a fleeing Mercedes car, dodging trams and civilian traffic while flying through underpasses at high speed.
There are a few fender benders en route, but it is mainly kept very grounded, with a tumble only occurring right at the end. The full scene reportedly took five days to film.
6. Initial D (2005)


Some truly fantastic road-racing sequences showcase the art of drift driving in this crowd-pleasing extravaganza.
Most of the stunt work is real, with directors Andrew Lau Wai-keung and Alan Mak Siu-fai reducing a planned 100 CGI effects to just four when they realised the power of physical motorsport during the shoot.
The on-road action in Initial D looks unusual, as its subject matter is “drift driving”, a skill that originated in Japan, where the driver intentionally oversteers – causing the rear tyres to lose traction – while maintaining control.
The story of Initial D was based on the hit Japanese manga of the same name, which illustrated the racing techniques in detail. The Hong Kong filmmakers filmed four races around Japan’s Mount Haruna, focusing on shooting the cars manoeuvring around hairpin bends to capture the drifting.
7. Motorway (2012)


A cops-and-robbers revenge tale that puts car handling at the centre, Soi Cheang Pou-soi’s Motorway is more focused on roadcraft than stunts. It features precision driving and more realistic crash-and-bash sequences than usual – courtesy of choreography by the prolific Ng Hoi-tong.
The highlight sees Anthony Wong Chau-sang’s experienced driver teach Shawn Yue Man-lok’s rookie policeman how to perform a tight reverse turn, using the “8,000rpm, 2km/h” technique to get out of an impossible corner.
Small alley-like streets, such as those in Kwun Tong, rather than open roads in the New Territories, are used as the racecourses here, making tight turns and clever steering essential.
