Sammo Hung Kam-bo’s Wheels on Meals (1984) operates on a simple premise: unite three of Hong Kong’s greatest martial arts talents and let the magic happen.
The action comedy, starring Hung alongside Jackie Chan and Yuen Biao, works brilliantly within its own parameters. It is entertaining throughout, has few cringeworthy comedic moments, and benefits from a surprisingly well-structured storyline.
If that was not enough, the action scenes are superb, and the fights are rightly considered to be some of the very best that the “Three Dragons” have performed on screen.
Hung’s fight choreography has always been more hard-hitting than Chan’s, and here his direction mixes goofing around with tough competition-style combat to outstanding effect.


As the Post reviewer in 1984 put it: “This jet-speed Cantonese comedy directed by funnyman martial arts expert Sammo Hung is the type of attraction that motivates people from Shau Kei Wan to San Po Kong to come out of their routine lives and jobs [and] then straight to the movie-houses.”
The story, set in Spain, features Yuen and Chan as two cheerful chaps who operate a mobile food van in Barcelona. They have integrated themselves into the local scene – something that, back then, was unusual for a Hong Kong film set abroad – and are friends with the locals, and even the police.
Hung plays the third main character, a buffoonish would-be private investigator who serves as the butt of the others’ jokes.
The story sees the trio trying to save an attractive Spanish pickpocket (former beauty queen Lola Forner) from a gang who want to kill her and steal her unexpected inheritance. This murderous gang features US karate champ Keith Vitali and kickboxing master Benny “The Jet” Urquidez.

The unlikely setting of Barcelona came about because producers Golden Harvest were facing stiff competition from upstart film company Cinema City.
The latter had big hits with the first three entries of the Aces Go Places series, which offered goofy slapstick humour, modern-day action, and a scene in Paris in the third instalment. Golden Harvest decided to shoot a film abroad, despite the extra expense, to add some exotic qualities to their film.
The idea for Hung to make a film in a foreign location came first, and the script was written to fit the setting he chose.
“We wanted to give the audience a location that was refreshingly different,” Hung said in an online interview. “We scouted many places and we found Barcelona to be a very nice city. We wrote the script there.”

The production team made good use of Barcelona’s distinctive architecture. Classic buildings like Antoni Gaudí’s unfinished cathedral Sagrada Familia feature throughout, and the production took over a tourist square and filled it with outdoor restaurants.
In spite of the language difficulties, Hung said it made a refreshing change to work in Europe, and he felt that the shoot actually went smoother than it might have at home.
Back then, it was difficult to get permits from the Hong Kong government to shoot on the street. That led to “steal shooting” – turning up at a spot unannounced and filming illegally – which could lead to trouble with the police. There was also triad activity and unofficial car racing on the streets.
“Shooting abroad, even if we wanted to shoot on a freeway, the police would stop the traffic for us,” Hung noted.

There are more scenes of plot and story development in Wheels on Meals than in a typical action comedy, but when the fight scenes do arrive, they are superlative.
A highlight is the extensive finale set inside a Spanish castle, which is really three fights in one. Chan fights Urquidez and Biao fights Vitali, while Hung has a rapier duel.
Chan’s fight is exceptional and ranks among his best. Although Chan fought realistically in his earlier films, he had been developing the more acrobatic and entertaining way of screen fighting that became his trademark. But his fight with Urquidez is simply a tough, down-and-dirty brawl.
Of interest to martial arts fans is that halfway through the bout, Chan uses some Western boxing techniques – he throws actual punches, rather than just emulating boxing footwork like Bruce Lee did – and it is fascinating to watch.

There were rumours that the fighters actually hit each other while filming the combat scenes. This probably came about because, according to Vitali, Hung had asked them to fight more aggressively.
Vitali had become overenthusiastic and accidentally knocked out Hung with a kick to the head, but instead of being annoyed, when he came to, Hung said he wanted that kind of fighting spirit to permeate the scenes.
“They wanted to see the hits come through looking like real hits,” Vitali said in his podcast. “You had to give 100 per cent on each take … everything had to be full power.”
As with the Aces Go Places films, stunts played a big part in Wheels on Meals. The car chases are fast and furious, and the car stunts are amazing, notably a scene that involves cars flipping and rolling down the road.

According to Yuen Biao, a French team of auto racers was hired to help out with the car stunts – they were experienced stunt drivers who had worked on some of the James Bond films. “We learned a lot from them,” Yuen said.
Making a film is always an adventure, and many stories surround the shoot. The US-based Urquidez was rumoured to have thrown down combat challenges to a number of Spanish martial arts schools, something which Hung has confirmed.
And then there was Hung’s ultra-weird perm hairstyle. “I thought I’d try a look that wasn’t typical of a Hong Kong Chinese” was his explanation for that.

Finally, there is the odd English title, which refers to Meals on Wheels, the name of a number of social programmes that deliver food for the elderly and the infirm.
The reversal happened because Golden Harvest had released two flops with English titles that began with the letter M, and superstitiously decided not to tempt fate and do it again.
