Best known for his hilarious portrayals of characters such as Gutthi, Dr Mashoor Gulati and Rinku Devi on Indian television, comedian and actor Sunil Grover is bringing his trademark character comedy to Hong Kong for one night only at the Hopewell Hotel’s Grand Ballroom in Wan Chai on September 27.
“This is all about celebrating what I’ve done on television so far,” Grover, 49, says.
With a career spanning more than two decades, Grover rose to national fame for his iconic characters: Gutthi on Comedy Nights with Kapil, Dr Mashoor Gulati and Rinku Devi on The Kapil Sharma Show, and those in Bollywood films including Ghajini (2008), Gabbar Is Back (2015), Bharat (2019) and Jawan (2023). He confirms all will be part of the Hong Kong set.
“Those characters which I have done … these are the popular characters people like watching, and I love performing these characters,” he says. “I’m bringing everything with me.”

When asked about his favourite character, Grover is diplomatic – but honest.
“All characters are my favourite. Characters which are liked by people are my favourite characters. But I like to perform as Dr Mashoor Gulati a lot, and of course I love dressing up in a sari for them.”
He also promises to bring his infamous Bollywood mimicry to the stage.
“Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan – actors who people love, I’m going to impersonate them,” he says.
Emphasising that his television work is what allows him to tour, Grover explains that “both have different joys”.
“Because we work behind the camera, people like watching us live also. It’s the outcome of performing in a studio that we get to perform live.”

Having done tours for close to 13 years now, Grover says the thrill of being in front of an audience is like no other – an “energy that is altogether different”.
For him, the biggest reward of live shows is the connection with the audience.
“With live shows, you get to travel, you get to see the people who are on that other side of the screen. People see us – performers, actors, comedians – on the screen, but we get to see those people who are giving so much love from the other side.
“That is the joy for me.”
