February is getting off to a colourful start. Dead Poets refreshes its menu, this time focusing on seminal painters through the medium of drink, while The Opposites and Avoca both host bars from far-flung locales. The former is hosting a minimalist, Asian-inspired bar from Hamburg, while the latter plays host to a Roman bar shining the spotlight on quality Italian wheat.

Start your February with a takeover all the way from Germany. Founder Dustin Le and head bartender Phoenix Headlam hail all the way from Hamburg, where they operate Asian-inspired and Japanese-named Ba Nomu. They look to bring minimalist, ingredient-focused ideas to The Opposites, similar to drinks like the Natsu comprising Nikka Days whisky, passion fruit, miso, toasted barley, beetroot, shiso and soda.

Following menus themed after writers and musicians, Dead Poets is turning to painters for its most recent launch. Liquid Gallery v4: Dead Painters “treats cocktails as canvases, deconstructing the lives and styles of history’s most iconic artists into flavour”, according to a release.

The concept also ties in with bartender Nikita Matveev’s Aberdeen Arts Row initiative on Aberdeen Street, which sees three F&B establishments that he’s founded focusing on culture this month. Each venue along the street centres on a different creative pursuit: The Old Man’s current Relations Menu is all about literature; Aer, an “audiophile restobar” serves as the musical listening lounge; while Dead Poets acts as the visual art segment.

Dead Poet’s new menu includes drinks such as Van Gogh’s Sunflower combining gin absinthe, sunflower seed and marigold cordial, as well as the Campbell’s Highball inspired by Andy Warhol’s pop art and comprising Jack Daniel’s, clarified coke, tomato and strawberry syrups.
