The burst of colour on the filter paper shows that black is a combination of colours. This technique of colour separation is called chromatography, and it was used to separate different plant pigments to show various colours.


Splitting Colors

The secret, water-absorbing chemical in a nappy is a polymer called sodium polyacrylate. A polymer is simply a long chain of repeating molecules. Super-absorbent polymers expand when they meet water because water is drawn into the molecules of the polymer. They work like giant sponges. Some polymers can soak up as much as 800 times their weight in water.

Polymers are substances which have a large number of units joined by the same kind of links. These substances often form into a chain. Glue is also a type of polymers. A solution of glue with borax and water produces a slimy material that is elastic enough to clump up to make a smile.


Make Slime

Baking soda and vinegar create an acid-base reaction, and the two chemicals work together to create carbon dioxide. Gases need a lot of room to spread out, therefore carbon dioxide starts to fill the bottle, and moves into the balloon to inflate it.


Live Balloons

Bubbles are formed in the liquid and foam appears on top of the soda. Each bubble seen in the soda is a collection of carbon dioxide gas. Salt and carbon dioxide are both kinds of matter that take up space. When salt is added to the cola, bubbles of carbon dioxide stick to the grains of salt. Larger bubbles will be formed and rise to the top, bringing small amounts of soda with them. This movement of gas makes foam on top of the liquid.


Foaming Soda

Using hot water, a jar, matches and some ice cubes to simulate clouds forming through condensation. The experiment demonstrates the relationship between hot air, cold air, water vapour and dust particles in nature.

The bottle is full of air. While you can’t blow air into the bottle, you are moving quite a bit of air along the sides of the bottle. When the air blows past the mouth of the bottle, it creates an area of low pressure behind it. This is called Bernoulli’s Principle. This area of low pressure is what the paper ball needs to fall out of the bottle’s mouth.

According to Newton’s First Law of Motion, an object at rest wants to stay at rest if it’s not moving, and to keep moving in a straight line if it is moving. That straw will not move unless some force is applied to it to make it move. The Third Law says that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. As you squeeze the bottle, air is forced out of the smaller straw and pushes against the clay in the larger straw. The resulting force causes the straw to “launch” through the air!
