Filipinos have placed higher levels of trust in the coastguard and the armed forces despite public rows between officials and pro-Duterte politicians over the country’s deepening ties with the US, according to the latest poll.

Among the 1,200 people surveyed by research firm OCTA in September, 75 per cent expressed satisfaction with the Philippine coastguard’s (PCG) performance over the past three months and 71 per cent said they trusted the outfit.

The results, released on October 22, also found that only 4 per cent were unhappy with the PCG’s work, while 5 per cent voiced distrust towards the personnel.

“These findings confirm that the PCG enjoys broad public approval, particularly in coastal regions where its operations are most visible,” OCTA said.

“Satisfaction appears to be shaped by both regional exposure and perceived responsiveness, especially in areas affected by maritime incidents or geopolitical tensions.”

The poll covered 18 zones and the PCG received a high satisfaction rating from the National Capital Region, a composite metropolitan area which includes Manila and 15 other cities, at 82 per cent.
