Malaysian police are investigating a killing near Kuala Lumpur as murder after a man rammed by a car died following an armed brawl in broad daylight that was caught on camera – footage that has stirred fresh alarm over brazen street violence in the country.
The fight, in which several men were filmed slashing at one another, broke out at around 2pm on Tuesday in the Taman Alam Megah neighbourhood of Shah Alam, police said.
One local man has been arrested in connection with the case.
Shah Alam police chief Assistant Commissioner Sarudin Samah said surveillance footage showed a group of men fighting before the confrontation escalated.
“CCTV footage showed a group of men fighting before they began slashing at one another,” he said in a statement on Tuesday. “A blue Perodua Alza was also seen hitting one of the suspects, who died at the scene.”

Police have not identified the dead man, describing him only as one of the individuals believed to have been involved in the fight, nor have they disclosed a motive or confirmed any gang-related connection.
Sarudin said the detained man was assisting with the investigation and that police had opened a murder inquiry under Section 302 of Malaysia’s Penal Code. The offence carries the death penalty or a prison term of between 30 and 40 years, plus a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane if the death sentence is not imposed.
The police chief urged the public not to speculate while investigators worked to establish what triggered the fight.
A one-minute dashcam clip that circulated widely on Malaysian social media after the killing shows several people rushing from vehicles to attack a man lying on the road, before another vehicle makes a U-turn and strikes a second man, who is then set upon by others.


The footage drew online comparisons with nearby Klang, a port city in Selangor long associated with gang activity. Shah Alam is the state capital of Selangor, adjoining Kuala Lumpur.
“Even Shah Alam has become Colombia,” one social media user wrote, while another called the violence “open air murder”.
The killing comes less than two weeks after a separate armed confrontation in Shah Alam. On August 13, a 38-year-old man suffered serious hand injuries after being slashed with a machete near a petrol station in Sri Muda. Police said two male suspects were believed to have used objects resembling firearms during the clash.
Other public attacks have drawn similar attention this year. Tong Wee Sheng, 38, was chased and repeatedly slashed in March with parangs – machete-like knives – in Tangkak, southern Johor state, before dying from his injuries. Three men were charged with his murder in May.
None of the cases is known to be connected, but the latest footage recalls a spate of gangland-style violence across the Klang Valley last year, when four men were killed in three separate shootings over eight days in June – including a killing in broad daylight in Klang – that prompted police assurances the situation was under control.
