Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has brushed aside calls to suspend or remove Malaysia’s anti-corruption chief, asking critics to “read his explanation”, after fresh reports about his shareholdings reignited public anger against the official.
Citing corporate filings, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday that Azam Baki, chief commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), was a key shareholder in an investment holding company.
Azam told local media on Wednesday that the report was “misleading” and that he had instructed his lawyers to send a letter of demand to Bloomberg. He said he would seek damages as well as an injunction against repeated allegations if needed.

The shares had been properly declared to the Public Service Department in 2025 and disposed of within the same year, Azam said, adding that he had held no shares since July last year.
Speaking after an event on Wednesday night, Anwar questioned why Azam should be removed if he was carrying out his duties and urged critics to consider the MACC chief’s response before passing judgment.
