The mother of Filipino stand-up comedian Goldenier Dagal has denounced her son’s alleged killers as “cowards”, revealing that Dagal received threats from people angry over his dark humour before he was gunned down at a bar in Pampanga province.

Dagal, 38, was seated at the bar when one of the three suspects approached and shot him last weekend. They fled the scene and the victim was rushed to a hospital where he died after multiple attempts to resuscitate him failed.

“My son is gone. A hired killer ended his life and made sure he does not survive,” Dagal’s mother Jocelyn Cruz said in a social media post on Monday.

“I know those he offended with his jokes during one of his stints in his stand-up comedy shows had planned to end his life,” she said.

“They are a bunch of cowards who cannot defend themselves and their faith, which was put in question through his dark humour.”

Cruz said her son’s jokes involved “making light of subjects that are generally considered serious, taboo, or distressing,” which served various psychological and social functions.
