Thunderstorms in Hong Kong as week of rain persists on Sunday
More than 30mm of rainfall recorded in most parts of the city, with heavy rain expected on Monday before easing later in the week
Hongkongers woke up to more rain and thunderstorms in the city on Sunday, with an amber rainstorm warning in force between 6am and 1pm.
After a week of rain, the Hong Kong Observatory warned that there would be more showers and squally thunderstorms on Sunday morning.
More than 30mm of rain was recorded in most parts of the city, meeting the threshold of an amber signal, the lowest level in the three-tier rainstorm warning system, the forecaster said.
The Observatory cancelled the amber rainstorm warning at 1pm.
The Drainage Services Department said on social media that it had deployed more than 40 emergency response teams immediately after the amber warning was issued, inspecting 240 flooding blackspots and handling calls for help.
With heavier rain persisting over North district and Tai Po, the department activated its emergency control centre at noon, scaled up its response teams to more than 60 and sped up its handling of public reports, the department said.
Rainfall of about 50mm was recorded across much of the city between 6am and 1pm, it added, with North, Yuen Long, Tai Po and Sai Kung districts recording close to 100mm.
