Catholic Church leaders will gather in Rome to hold a conclave to elect the next pope on May 7, 2025, following the death of Pope Francis on April 21. The cardinals from around the world will meet in the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican, and cannot leave until they have chosen a successor. There is intense speculation about whether the conclave will select someone expected to build on Francis’ legacy or return to older church traditions. There is also a possibility that the first Asian pontiff could be elected, with Cardinal Luis Tagle of the Philippines cited as a contender.
