South Korean drug lord’s plan to use drone to escape Philippine prison foiled by test flight

The plan was reportedly set to be carried out earlier this year, just before Park Wang-yeol was to be repatriated to South Korea to face charges for allegedly importing 4.8kg (10.5lbs) of drugs.

Footage of a person dangling from a high-capacity drone above a field in the Philippines turned out to be a practice run for a prison break planned by notorious South Korean crime lord Park Wang-yeol. Known as the “sugar cane field killer”, Park was serving a 60-year sentence at Manila’s New Bilibid Prison for the murder of three South Koreans in 2016. Authorities uncovered his 100 million won (US$74,000) plot to use a drone capable of carrying up to 75kg (165lbs) to escape just ahead of his scheduled repatriation to South Korea on other charges.
