Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the Kuril Islands for the first time on Thursday, prompting a “strong” protest from Japan, which also claims the Russian-controlled territory. Relations between Tokyo and Moscow have long been dogged by tensions over the four contested islands, known in Japan as the Northern Territories, which were seized by the former Soviet Union in 1945.
