Death toll rises to at least 13 after massive earthquake shakes southern Japan

Emergency crews worked through the night after a massive magnitude 7.1 earthquake shook Japan’s southern Kyushu island on Tuesday. The quake also registered a highest-level 7 on Japan’s Shindo seismic scale. In Kashima Town, the quake collapsed the second floor of the Aeon Mall shopping centre, killing at least five people and trapping an unknown number of others in the wreckage, according to fire department officials in the prefectural capital of Kumamoto. Japan’s NHK national television said the collapse came after an explosion, which was believed to have been related to a gas leak in the building.
