A volcano erupted in southwest Iceland on January 14, 2024. Several houses in the nearby town of Grindavík were destroyed by fiery lava flows, but posed no immediate danger as about 4,000 people were evacuated to safety. The eruption was the second in four weeks on the Reykjanes peninsula, and the fifth since 2021.
