Former US president Donald Trump was found liable for battery and defamation in a sexual abuse civil case in Manhattan federal court on May 9, 2023. Jurors decided that Trump sexually abused E. Jean Carroll and awarded the writer US$5 million in compensatory and punitive damages. The former columnist for Elle magazine called the decision a victory “for every woman who has suffered because she was not believed”. Donald Trump, who is campaigning to retake the White House in 2024, described the trial as “unfair” and his lawyer said he will appeal the case to a higher court.
