A rare fossilised skeleton of a Gorgosaurus has been sold on auction in the United States for US$6.1 million, in the latest of a series of controversial sales involving dinosaur remains. An anonymous buyer placed the winning bid for the skeleton at a Sotheby's natural history auction in New York City on July 28, 2022. It is legal in the US to buy and sell fossils for profit if they were found on private land. Some scientists worry that growing interest among the world’s richest people in owning prehistoric artefacts will hurt palaeontology research because fossils in private hands could become difficult to access and study.
