The United Nations human rights chief, Michelle Bachelet, said on June 13, 2022, that she would not seek a second term. She cited personal reasons and denied speculation that the decision was linked to criticism of her recent trip to Xinjiang, China. Bachelet has been denounced for her lax stance on rights abuses in some countries, most notably China.
