It was a last-ditch attempt to stop Russia’s advancing forces in their tracks – raise the dam and flood the banks of the Dnipro River to create a barrier around the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv. But two days later, a Russian air strike hit a hydroelectric plant and dam that sent even more water into the town of Demydiv, about 30km (19 miles) north of Kyiv. The floods saved the town from the worst of the war as Russian troops turned to more urban areas such as Irpin and Bucha, which became the front lines and witnessed horrific tragedy. But now draining the town of 750 homes of the knee-deep waters is proving to be a difficult and lengthy battle.
