Russian forces were bombarding and surrounded Ukraine’s strategically important southern port city of Mariupol on March 11, 2020. Home to 446,000 people, the city has seen some of the nation’s worst devastation since Russia’s invasion started on February 24. Ukrainian officials said over 1,500 people, including children, have been killed in the siege which they say has targeted residential areas in the city. Russian forces also continued to attack facilities around the capital Kyiv as the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky continued to call for Russia to agree to a ceasefire and end the war.
