Thousands of Afghans flee as UN warns of 'unprecedented' civilian deaths from Taliban offensives

Thousands of Afghan families have fled their homes to escape fighting in the former Taliban stronghold of Kandahar. Since early May 2021, violence has surged across several provinces after the insurgents launched a sweeping offensive to coincide with a final withdrawal of US-led foreign forces from Afghanistan. The United Nations is warning that the country could see the highest number of civilian deaths in more than a decade if the insurgents are able to continue their offensive across the country.
