192 died in Vancouver care homes under policy that delayed Covid-19 outbreak declarations

At least 192 residents died of Covid-19, with more than 1,000 people infected, at Vancouver-area care homes where the declaration of coronavirus outbreaks was delayed as part of an official policy, a South China Morning Post investigation has found. Under the strategy, care home outbreaks were deliberately not declared if just one “low risk” worker became infected.

British Columbia health authorities are now under fire for the protocol – known as “enhanced surveillance” or “enhanced monitoring” – which allowed visits and group activities to continue after the initial staff infections.
