San Francisco bans facial recognition surveillance

Xinyan Yu

San Francisco became the first US city to ban local police use of facial recognition technology. The ban does not apply to personal, business or federal government use. It’s part of broader oversight legislation that orders local agencies to spell out details of any surveillance currently in use. Supporters say facial recognition technology is a serious threat to civil rights. Opponents say it helps fight crimes.
