Ding Liren has become the first world chess champion from China after defeating Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi in a series of tense rapid-play tiebreaker games on April 30, 2023, in Kazakhstan’s capital Astana. Norway’s Magnus Carlsen held the title for a decade, but decided not to defend this year. Born in China “chess city” Wenzhou, 16-year-old Ding burst on to the scene when he became the country’s youngest national-level chess champion in 2019.
