Waglan Lighthouse: shining a light for 124 years

Antony DicksonandShanshan Kao

Located 5.4 nautical miles southeast of Stanley village, the Waglan Lighthouse compound was constructed by China’s Imperial Maritime Customs and completed in May 1893, when the island it stands on was not yet part of colonial Hong Kong.

It is a rare example of a prefabricated cast-iron lighthouse from the 19th century. It has been listed as a one of Hong Kong’s 114 declared historic monuments.
